Half of a rodent job is exclusion. We find the runways by the rub marks and droppings, work out where they are entering, usually a weep hole, a gap behind the eaves, a torn subfloor vent or a gap under the roller door, then clear the population with lockable stations and traps and close the entries with mesh, brush seal and mortar. Roof void jobs get a follow up two weeks later to check the stations and confirm the runways have gone cold.

Are the stations safe with a dog in the yard?
External stations are lockable, pegged down and keyed, so a dog cannot open one. Inside the roof void we mostly use traps rather than bait, which removes the question entirely.
What about a rat dying in the wall?
It is the reason we bait outside and trap inside. Traps in the roof void mean we remove what we catch on the follow up visit instead of leaving it in a cavity.
Why proof at all if the bait works?
Because bait empties the house and proofing keeps it empty. A roof void that is open at the eaves will be re-colonised the next cold snap, and you will be paying for the same job every winter.
